Train to New Duluth

This train ride took us south along the ST Louis River, this is what most of the trip looked like.
We only saw some ducks along the way. We saw an eagle but he was way too fast and high up for us to get a picture.
Another view of the marsh land along the St Louis River.
This is the train we rode on. The open-air car would have been nice but it had been raining and was cold; however, brave soles (Bill included) rode out there for a while to get some photos.

The train as we were preparing to board for our trip.

This is the engine. It disconnects once we get to the end of the line (for our trip) and moves over to another set of tracks to reconnect to the other end of the train to take us back to the depot.

The engine as it was reconnecting with the open-air car for our return trip.

Jo could not get over these fishermen in their boat in the midst of the fog on the river.

This is a washout that they had some time ago. As you can see they had to cease using this section of track.

The LS&M Railroad uses vintage passenger cars (second car) as well as an open "safari car" on its excursions. The first passenger train between the two cities began operation in 1870. The present Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad was organized in 1981, taking the name of Duluth's first railroad, and using a portion of the original trackage along the scenic St. Louis River.
