This is a map of the Voyageurs National Park. There are 5 lakes with MANY MANY MANY little islands. One could easily get lost navigating these waters if they didn't know what they were doing.
This is the boat that the park service uses for the trip to Kettle Falls. They also have a small pontoon boat for other trips throughout the lake and area.
We spotted our first eagle shortly after leaving the pier. Can you see him?
Minnesota's State Bird is the ? You guessed it, the Loon pictured here. They sound very pretty.
The lake has a history for gold and was explored by several. We stopped at a small island called Little America Island where they mined gold. Most of the area now is owned by the national park service except for some privately-owned cabins which have been handed down over the years through families.
Rainy Lake also had areas where they were mining for gold.
The house boat rental businesses here are quite busy. Here it appears someone is having a get together and some of the guests have arrived. The house boat is towing the others. At the right-hand side of the house boat is a large screen-in area where there was a group of people just kicking back relaxing.
One of the entrances into the old mine.
Another eagle. Can you spot him?
There are many coves around all of the islands. Here a family stopped to go for a swim?
These are part of the Harry Oveson Fish Camp which is the only remaining intact commercial fishing camp in the area. It has the Oveson house, an ice house and fish processing building and is now owned by the part service.
Here's another entrance down into the old mine.
