U.S.S. South Dakota Memorial

The main mast, three 16-inch gun turrets, anchor and other parts of the battleship U.S.S. South Dakota, later called "Battleship X" stand in place in a full size layout of the main deck. The name Battleship X was given to the ship because the Japanese claimed to have sunk the ship three times. The U.S.S. South Dakota was the first battleship given a mission to defend a Carrier, it was the Carrier Enterprise that was defended during the battle of Santa Cruz.

Among the ships World War II Battle Awards were 13 Battle Stars. Maybe some of our Navy past and present can shed some light on Battle Stars?
Looking forward from one of the three 16-inch  gun turrents.

Such a large ship required a huge 13-ton anchor and chain.

Looking aft from the main mast
Conning Tower Hatch, 12 inches thick, weighing in at 8,000 lbs.
16-inch 45-caliber Gun Barrel, with a bore of 16", length of 61' 4" weighing in at 94 tons, I think that includes the turrent, could not get an answer  to that. It fired a round weighing 2,700 lbs, propelled by a powder charge of 535 lbs, which sent the projectile some 36,900 yards that's a fair piece down the road.
One of the two four blade propellers on the ship, there were two outboard five blade propellers. This one has a diameter of 17' 6" and weighs 18.2 tons.
Need help from the Navy on this one, my guess is that it is a gyroscope of some kind.
I bet this was good money back then, but the men who signed up did it for country, not money.
 Man has the pay changed
This one would have a lot of people up in arms if it were used today
